ABOUT
US Barbara MacFarlane, MD is a board-certified Family Medicine and Sports Medicine physician with the American Board of Family Medicine. Before joining Ryan Ranch Medical Group, she practiced medicine both in Family Medicine and Sports Medicine in Santa Cruz County since moving there in 1988.
She is a graduate of the University of Calgary Medical School in Calgary, Canada. She completed her Family Medicine Residency at Holy Cross Hospital in Calgary and then followed this with two years of Orthopedic Surgery training at Foothills Hospital in Calgary. Prior to medical school, Dr. MacFarlane completed a graduate degree in Exercise Physiology at the University of Waterloo in Canada.
Even before medical school, she has always had a passion for health, wellness and exercise. She was involved in exercise research, cardiac rehabilitation, and fitness consulting. She has published and presented several papers at research conferences. She continues her writings today with monthly articles in the MidCounty Post on topics of Health and Sports Medicine (www.mcpost.com). Living a healthy active lifestyle is definitely a sound foundation from which to build a life long commitment to health.
Dr. MacFarlane is the mother of two boys who are both university students. For enjoyment and lifestyle benefits, she likes to run and play tennis competitively. Traveling and making sure she sees the snow and at the same time keeps her skiing skills intact are also top priorities in her free time.
